The International Association of Lions Clubs was organized on June 17, 1917 by Chicago businessman Melvin Jones. Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes. The association's motto is "We Serve."

In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions international convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. She challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." From this time, Lions clubs have been actively involved in service to the blind and visually impaired.

The Keokuk Lions received its Charter on April 12, 1921. The first service club to be chartered in Keokuk, the Keokuk Club was sponsored by the Quincy, IL Lions Club. The Keokuk club was among the first 150 Lions Club organized. Today there are more than 46,000 Clubs in 191 Countries and geographical areas.

The Keokuk Club has sponsored Lions Clubs in Nauvoo and Warsaw, IL, Memphis, MO. and Fairfield and Donnellson, IA.
